This course is designed for anyone who is struggling with conflict in their work environment, and is seeking better conflict management and negotiation skills. You can register for one of our regularly scheduled courses or we can customize a course for your team at your location.
Hours: 5 hours of classroom participation and 1 hour of pre-course preparation.
Course Description
This course will define conflict and discuss the differences between conflict management, conflict resolution, and conflict transformation. Sources of conflict and its uses as a positive catalyst for improved creativity, job satisfaction, motivation, and organizational culture will be addressed. In contrast, the negative consequences of unmanaged conflicts will be discussed and symptoms identified. Participants will learn to utilize proven tools and methods for conflict resolution and negotiation, and how to develop a plan to prevent negative conflict while promoting positive conflict.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the course, participant will be able to:
1. Define conflict, conflict management, conflict resolution, and conflict transformation
2. Identify sources of conflict
3. Discuss the consequences of negative conflict
4. Understand the benefits of managed conflict and its positive consequences
5. Develop a plan for managing, resolving and preventing conflict
6. Mediate ongoing conflict with clients and colleagues by using effective negotiation techniques
Course Materials
Participants will be asked to complete Thomas-Killmann Conflict Management Style inventory prior to attending the course. Handouts and reading materials will be provided during the course.
Course Procedures
The course will consist of lecture, interactive experimental exercises, group discussion, and video presentations. This is an interactive and participative seminar style course that requires sharing of participants’ own conflict management styles and psychological types. Variety of case examples will be given and discussed from a variety of different perspectives.
